What Are the HVAC Refrigerant Changes in 2025?
Pacific Northwest homeowners in Montana, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington, pay attention!
Big changes are coming to the heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) industry, specifically regarding refrigerants used in your systems.
How do these changes impact your home? Read on!
This blog from Day & Night, your trusted source for licensed HVAC dealerships near you, will explain new refrigerant regulations in the heating and cooling industry and how they might affect you.
The New Deal on Refrigerants
Starting January 1, 2025, HVAC manufacturers will begin to slowly phase out the R-410A refrigerant commonly used in most heat pumps and air conditioners.
Per the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), manufacturers are moving toward a new generation of A2L refrigerants with a lower global warming potential (GWP), making them a more eco-friendly solution for homeowners.
What Does This Mean for You?
If you’re considering replacing your HVAC system in the next 1-2 years, here’s what you need to know:
- Price Increase on New Systems: The new A2L refrigerants are more environmentally friendly, but the equipment itself has a slightly higher price tag.
- Consider Upgrading Now: To avoid potential cost increases, consider replacing your system before 2025. This way, you can take advantage of readily available R-410A equipment at current prices.
You can also take advantage of federal tax credits, earning up to a $600 tax break on qualifying AC units and up to $2,000 on qualifying heat pumps. These credits run through 2032.
Peace of Mind with Existing HVAC Systems
There’s no need to panic if your current system uses R-410A. The new refrigerant regulations do not affect existing equipment.
You can continue to use and service your current system for its lifespan, which is typically 12-15 years. Additionally, there will still be enough R-410A refrigerant available for repairs for many years to come.
You can still buy a new system that uses R-410A in 2024 without worrying about the supply running out.
Time to Say Goodbye to R-22?
If your system uses R-22 refrigerant, it’s likely more than 12 years old, nearing the end of its lifespan. The EPA began phasing out R-22 in 2010 due to its environmental impact.
Whether you purchase a system using R-410A or newer refrigerant, upgrading to a new system can slash your energy bills and protect your budget against costly, unexpected repairs.
No Retrofitting With New Refrigerants
Unfortunately, you cannot modify your existing R-22 or R-410A system to use the new A2L refrigerants. These systems operate at different pressures and are not compatible.
Replacing your entire unit is the most cost-effective solution when your old equipment needs to be replaced.
Refrigerant Safety
The new A2L refrigerants are mildly flammable, but there’s no need to be concerned. Like all refrigerants, specific regulations, codes, and standards apply. Day & Night technicians are trained and certified to handle these refrigerants safely.
The Future of HVAC: Environmentally Friendly and Efficient
These changes are a positive step towards a greener future. By transitioning to more climate-friendly refrigerants, we’re all contributing to a healthier planet.
Additionally, newer HVAC systems are generally more energy efficient, which can save you money on utility bills in the long run.
