How to Reset a Day & Night Furnace

Imagine waking up to a chilly home on a brisk Pacific Northwest morning, only to discover your Day & Night furnace is not working.

Before calling a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) professional for help, try resetting your furnace.

At Day & Night, we have the tools to assist you with your furnace woes. Our online directory of Day & Night dealers gives you a choice of experts in Idaho, Montana, Oregon, and Washington. However, a furnace reset can often restore warmth to your home without needing an HVAC technician.

It’s easy to do yourself and doesn’t require any special tools. Here is what you need to know:

Understanding Your Furnace Components

Before resetting your Day & Night furnace, familiarize yourself with some key components:

  • Circuit Breaker: A specific breaker inside your electrical panel controls the power supply to your furnace.
  • Disconnect Switch: Typically near the furnace itself, this switch resembles a light switch and cuts power directly to the unit, bypassing the electrical panel.
  • Reset Button: Usually red or yellow, this button is inside the blower compartment and acts as a safety feature. It automatically shuts down the furnace to prevent overheating and potential damage. Clogged air filters are a common reason for overheating, triggering the reset button to pop out. Push it back in to restart the system.

Resetting Your Day & Night Furnace

Look at the circuit breaker in your electrical panel. If it flipped to the off position, turn it back on. If it is on, try flipping it off for a few minutes and then back on. It may be enough to restart your furnace.

If it does not start, try using the disconnect switch. Turn the switch off for a few minutes and then back on. It may reboot the furnace control panel.

Next, use the reset button. If your furnace has an electronic ignition, turn the circuit breaker off and open the blower cabinet. If you discover the button has popped out, press it firmly for about 10 seconds. Close the cabinet, flip the circuit breaker on, and raise the thermostat a few degrees.

The furnace should kick on, blow warm air, and complete a heating cycle or two.

A Note About Older Furnaces

If you have an older Day & Night furnace with a pilot light, ensure the light, circuit breaker, and gas supply are off before resetting it. Always consult your operating manual for step-by-step instructions.

If your furnace is approaching the end of its useful service life, consider replacing it. You will gain an energy-efficient furnace with electronic ignition and an easier reset. Unlike pilot lights, which constantly burn gas, electronic ignition only operates when the furnace heats your home.

When a Furnace Reset Does Not Work

There are several reasons why your furnace may not respond to a reset:

  • Significant Malfunction: A reset typically addresses minor issues. A more complex problem requires professional diagnosis and repair.
  • Overheating: If the reset button keeps tripping, it indicates a persistent overheating problem that requires attention.
  • Control Panel: In rare cases, the furnace control panel is faulty and requires repair.

If a reset does not solve the problem, finding a local Day & Night HVAC dealer through Day & Night Northwest’s online directory is your next step.
